St John’s College, Jaffna is one of the oldest private educational institutions in Sri Lanka, founded by the London Missionaries (CMS) in 1823. The founder missionary the Rev. Joseph Knight, who arrived in 1818, initiated the establishment of the school at Nallur. From the inception, the school has been imparting a holistic education, with the curricular and co-curricular activities along with the inculcation of good discipline. The school has produced a number of eminent and outstanding personalities in all walks of life. Today after 190 years of smooth and rough sails the school continues to fulfil the ideals that the founders laid. The school has extended its hand of mercy and support to the people in Sri Lanka proving itself to be a Christian value based service oriented institution.
The Vision, Mission, Aims & Objectives of the College are based on the verse,
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
"To create an ethos for students to attain excellence spiritually, academically, morally and socially."
"To lead, motivate and provide training to achieve the vision"
"Holistically nurture body, mind and spirit to enrich and empower individuals to discover talents, skills and abilities, and enable them to attain their full potential and develop value-based personality."
"To create a better environment for students and teachers to perform well."
The college has been focussing equally on studies, co-curricular activities and the inculcation of good discipline among students with the view to achieving its vision.
St John’s is concerned with the students who need special attention in their studies, and as such, special classes are conducted after school for them to achieve the goal of “No Failures.”
At present, the college is endowed with a newly reconstructed Library with all required books and journals.
There are three separate Laboratories for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Besides this, a well-equipped Junior Laboratory is available for the Middle school students.
Information Technology is becoming prominent and essential nowadays, and the Johnians are privileged to study Computer Science from their primary classes.
A spoken English activity is conducted for all students from Grade 1 to Advanced Level, in the mornings from 7.50 - 8.00 from Monday to Friday, where students get the opportunity to practise language expressions useful to their day-to-day life in a stress-free environment.
